This is my Forum and when l say you can read old posts but not respond to them, that’s the way it’s going to be! Thanks to your silly reactivation of ancient posts you displaced two hours of my work before l left for Santa Barbara!

Google understands the principle of being seen first. Same thing applies to the Forum.
The main reason is that if you're not on the front page of Google, you won't be found by potential customers that are looking for your product or services. Therefore, it's essential to be on the first page of Google if you want to generate traffic and leads for your company.
The repeat posting of an old post after you specifically said not to, well that was poking the bear.

Understood - I will not comment on older posts anymore, but just read & digest them.

What can I do if I have a question re. the content of an old post ?

Sorry Andy, one more question; when does a post qualify as an old post - 1 week, 2 weeks, a month, etc ?

I am not constantly on the web due to our satellite connection being intermittent, and from time to time I have to do a stint in hospital to get some benign growths on my kidney removed, so there will be a delay.

What's the cut-off, please ?

A lot of this hassle and ill feelings could be avoided with some simple technological solutions.

- Lock older threads to prevent replies.
- Pin posts (permanently or temporarily) if they must be on the first page of the forum.
- Separate the Cym and Odont content into two separate boards (currently they are all on the same board, the "NHO Public Forum") so that Odont content doesn't "override" recent Cym posts.

It also seems that both Andy and sabre have forgotten the definition of a forum:
Cambridge Dictionary wrote:a place on the internet where people can leave messages or discuss particular subjects with other people at the same time
Merriam-Webster wrote:a medium (such as a newspaper or online service) of open discussion or expression of ideas
It seems that Andy is trying to use the forum for advertising his latest hybrids, which is not what the software is designed to do. I suggest focussing on Facebook or the main page of the NHO website for this purpose.

Honestly, this is yet another example of behaviour that I think is driving people away from the forum and the hobby. The atmosphere here is not one to encourage intelligent, friendly discussion and I think the ever-decreasing posting by other members of this forum demonstrates that fact.

I couldn’t care less about posting so long as l see people are reading the posts.
Any post from twelve months ago or more is too old. Start a new thread!
The idea of splitting Cym and Odont posts could well be viable. But it involves Tony’s work and he is a busy man. I will ask.
It’s rather academic to quote some Pommie definition of a Forum. Maybe some people prefer to read rather than post!
Having just witnessed some of the worst AOS judging of my lifetime, l’m on the warpath. Incompetent judges who are too lazy to refer to OrchidWiz and award clearly incorrectly labelled plants must be censured and re-educated!

I would suggest asking in a completely different thread. That is start your own new thread with a new post.

I have sat patiently through reading this thread as opinions have developed but it now seems to me that the discussion has got totally out of hand. Yes, I was surprised to see age old threads being reawakened instead of just starting a fresh thread, but surely the whole idea is that forums move forward rather than backwards. I don't buy the excuse that satellite contact causes delays - some of the regurgitated comments are a couple of years old. As for separating Odontoglossums from Cymbidiums that would be a complete waste of effort bearing in mind how little reaction there seems to be in the Odontoglossum threads. When Andy posts a long list of fresh information it is so simple to target just one genus or the other.
We are so lucky that Andy provides this forum for us, using his personal time and resources. We can read back as far as we want to or just use the search box to pull up a specific item. We should respect Andy's rules and work around our own needs. OK, Andy has commercial interests at New Horizon so if he wants to use HIS forum for publicity, so be it. I support Andy's frustrations of what is going on - if readers don't agree perhaps they should peruse some other internet souces but my guess is that you will not find a source which provides such specialist high quality and reliable information as this forum.

For Andy and Tony:

Straightforward addon for the forum software to manage older threads. Problem solved.

Thank you Richard for your innate fairness and practicality! I always look for your input on any Odont Alliance post made. Thank you Terry, you’ve been with Forum longer than most and a witty response never goes astray.
Thank you Australis, l will see if Tony can assist me with your suggestion. But when l return home. I have a very busy day in SB today before my return to El Retiro tomorrow.
